Negotiate it

As I stated in the article Ignorance is not cheap, I am no more in the interest bearing category. There are two ways to get out of this category. One is paying your bills on time and the other is living without a credit card. So which one am I? Keep reading to find out.

I turned on the TV to Oprah to see what she had on that day. Her guest-Suzie Orman, topic-don’t know, but it had to do with something about debt. I was a little late into the show. I watched the show and listened as Suzie Orman, kept saying fico score, interest rate, negotiate it. You see for years I had called the credit card company up and asked for my interest rate to be reduced, but the answer was always, we do not have any lower rate programs at this time, call back in a couple of months. Well today was different. Fueled by the constant lies of the credit card company, supported by the words of Suzie Orman and ignited by the reaffirmation of Oprah’s head nodding to Suzie’s words, I decided today was the today. I picked up the phone, called the company and asked for a lower interest rate. I was given the same story, and I told the lady I was tiered of hearing the same story every year.

I was put on hold, and then transferred. I kept strong, and demanded a lower interest rate, again the same story, the same answer from me and then as before I was put on hold and transferred. A lady that spoke in a stern voice came on the phone with the same the same excuse, I snapped back in a sterner voice and demanded that it be reduced or the account closed. She retrieved, put me on hold and then transferred me. Ah the top gun came out, with the same excuse in a sterner voice. I was unyielding. Not one side wanted to back down. I threw in an ultimatum, either it is reduced or the account is closed. The account was closed. She then had the audacity to say that I had six months to change my mind. Before she could even complete her sentence, I said, no you guys have six months to change your mind. I know some of you are wondering what of your fico score, would that not affect it? If it does so what, I would rather take a hit there and have my peace of mind. You can read more about this on my blog Living credit card free.

Some of you may be thinking - You can’t even negotiate for a lower interest rate, how can you write this section? Well, I did negotiate. The outcome was not what was expected but I believe this was the best outcome for me. The question still remains, how can you negotiate for a lower interest rate? The answer is simple - call and ask. Yes, it is as simple as that. If you are feed up with the stories as I was, take your business somewhere else. There are other credit card companies that would be glad to have you as a customer.
