Protecting your credit card

  • Make a list of all your credit cards, including their numbers and expiry dates so you can act quickly if they are stolen. Keep this list in a secure place; do not keep it in your wallet. It is best to memorize PIN numbers, rather than keep them written down.

  • If you can, only take the cards you need when you are out shopping and leave all others at home. Always double-check the amount on the receipt that you are signing for and make sure you get your card back from the merchant.

  • When handling your credit cards in public, try not to leave your credit card sitting on a counter, or in areas where someone can easily see your card number or record it using a hidden video camera.

  • Always check your credit card statements immediately and call your credit card company right away if you notice any strange activity. Most thieves will try to use your credit card within 24 hours, before you notice it is gone.

  • Check your statements carefully for unauthorized transactions or duplicate entries.

  • Shred credit card receipts and statements after you have verified that the information is correct, so that your information does not fall into the wrong hands.

  • Following these few tips will go a long way toward protecting your credit card information so that thieves don’t spoil your shopping trip.
