.Fill up early in the morning or in the late evenings when it is cool. The afternoon sun heats and expands the gas your car‘s gas tank. Once you open you tank, gas evaporates. As you fill your tank, gas vapors are pushed out. Although it may be argued that the amount sums up to only a few cents worth of gas, every penny counts.
.Use the recommended octane level. For most cars this is low-octane “regular” gas. Using a higher octane level gas has no benefit unless your engine is knocking.
.Don’t top off your gas tank. Gas pumps are equipped with vapor recovery systems that feedback escaping gas vapors into their tanks. The excess gas may be drawn into the vapor line and head right back to the gas station’s fuel tank. Topping off your gas tank means paying for gas your did not receive.
.Don’t top off your gas. Gas expands when headed and extra room in the cars gas tank is need to compensate for this. If there is no extra room, gas can evaporate into your car’s collection system, degrading it and causing high gas emissions.
.Don’t fill up if the tanker truck is filling up the station’s tank on a hot day. If the tanker has been driving on a hot day, the fuel in its tank can be really hot. Dumping the hot fuel in the stations tank, can cause it to expand, giving you less bang for your buck.
